  1. Well there government is increasing the CAFE standards (Cooperate Average Fuel Economy). As of 2004 the average for a manufacturers cars must exceed 27.5 mpg. By 2020 manufacturers will be required to meet a 35mpg rule. This is calculated by averaging the fuel economy of all the passenger cars the manufacturer makes. Light trucks are required to meet lower, less stringent CAFE standards.

There is also the gas guzzler tax. Any vehicle getting under an average of 22.5 mpg is subject to this tax. The tax goes from $1000 to a vehcile that gets a combined MPG of 21.5 to as much as $7700 for a vehicle which gets 12.5mpg. So in reality the government is indirectly encourages consumers to buy better fuel mileage cars by forcing vehicle manufacturers to make more fuel efficient cars.

  2. Nothing at all, the oil companies are running the gov.

  3. Absolutely nothing. Japan, China, Europe and other foreign makers are doing way more then this country is.

Our auto makers are just way to stupid to see the light. When GM and Ford are belly up, then maybe then the government will come up with a plan. Not a fix but a plan........

  4. They let oil companies sell gasoline for $3.70 a gallon.

That's probably the only way to get soccer moms to trade-in the gas guzzling Hummer H2 for something smaller and more efficient.

  5. Currently, the federal government is offering a tax incentive to hybrid buyers and I believe some states (Corn Belt) are offering tax breaks for flex fuel vehicles designed to run on ethanol.

  6. I know they use to, and believe they still are offering rebates and tax credits to people who buy certain hybrid cars.
