What is the greenish coat which gets deposited on copper when it is kept for long time?

  1. Rocks answer is pretty much right on. Cu (0) does slowly become oxidized to copper oxide then to the hydrated hydroxycarbonate from moisture and CO2 in the air, which is rather insoluble and has the characteristic greenish color


  2. Basic copper carbonate i.e. Cu(OH)2.CuCO3

  3. Its the result of copper oxidation. its exactly the same scenario as rust on steel. Its alittle more prefered then rust but still basically rust.
