I do Geology and the hardest natural material known to man is Diamond.

"hardest thing" like the term "fastest car" sometimes requires a definition of terms. Hardness is commonly defined as the ability to resist scratching in which case diamond would be the hardest at 10 on the MOHS hardness scale. By the way, there is a story/factoid often circulated that only a diamond can scratch glass. Next time you have a piece of flat glass that is not needed, take an aluminum soda can, leave it outside in the rain for 24 hrs or so, then carefully (don't cut yourself on the glass)rub the base of the can on the flat glass, as if you were using the base to scrape something off of the glass (improvised ice scraper). later if you clean/dry the glass piece you will see lots of scratches from an aluminum can base. or was it a diamond grit base?

Carbon in the form of diamond is the hardest substance in the world, followed i think by tungsten which is what they use to make lightbulb filaments with!
