  1. in addition to the answer provided by shay there are numerous factors causing the heat island. ie concrete asphalt, glass, auto exhausts all contribute to the heat island effect.these absorb sunlight and heat and retain it over a longer period of time compared to rural landscapes or water.


  2. Concrete and asphalt absorb and store the heat of the sunlight much more than soil and trees at the countryside. That way, during the summer, you will experience a remarkable cool down as you leave the city.

    It's the opposite during the winter. Since the sun has little power to heat buildings and streets up, due to its low angle and the snow cover in the city, actually it'll be some warmer in the city. That's because all the industry or heaters at people's homes will keep the city a few degrees warmer than surrounding areas.

  3. Basically it is that cities produce extra heat and form an island (so to speak) where the air temperature is higher.
