  1. Can be anything.

Some flights are less than 30 minutes long, for example Ryanair fly 6 flights a day from Glasgow to Dublin and Belfast, each flight is just 15 minutes on a Boeing 737-800, so 30 minutes before landing the aircraft is still on the ground!

It depends on pilots, airlines, aircraft, airport, runway, weather.

  2. It could still be at or near cruising level. Depends on the approach path to the airport, weather, other traffic, whether it has to go into a hold (stack), terrain... Flights under an hour long might not get very high before they start descending; longer flights might be at 37,000ft for example. There is no single answer to this question.

  3. Very variable, but I could tell you, that if you're flying an approach into a busy terminal area, you will probably have initiated your decent. On the other hand, low traffic areas can allow you to hold your decent till the last minute, so in this case, you will probably still be at cruise level.

  4. It would vary depending on traffic in the skies at the time and the height air traffic control tower wants the airplane to fly at.

  5. Cruising level. Do not use your phone until the aircraft landed and reached the terminal. You are not allowd to and it's a risk for everyone on the plane, or anyone on the plane's crash route =)

Just do the phone call when you get to the airport. You'll probably spend much more than 30 min. at the airport before you leave it.

You can not have your phone on since the aircraft leaves the terminal until it reaches the destination airport's terminal. Takeoff, approach and landing are the most critical moments to interrupt the aircraft communications.
