  1. Great answer by captanmidnght....go Red!!!! :)

Yes digital camcorders, like the Red Epic can shoot in 5K with recent developments in technology, but even that is a downconversion from film. Some movies shot on 35mm film (even somewhat old films), and digitally scanned have clocked in at around 6K resolution.

Actually, the theoretical resolution of IMAX theaters is 18K!!!! (shot on 70mm film)  However, when working with digital, that's almost impossible, so many IMAX movies edited digitally are downconverted to 8K (if you call that downconverting). I believe The Dark Knight was mastered in 8K.

I doubt that the human eye can distinguish between 8K from 5K.... and I can imagine that would be a nightmare to edit

    :O   .

And that's just for video...still photography can go much further. I've heard of pictures shot at resolutions more than 1 gigapixel.

  2. The highest definition in consumer HDTV is 1080p, which is 1080x1900 pixels, progressively scanned.

The highest video definition POSSIBLE is unknown (anything is possible)! :D ...but if you mean the highest resolution video for which there are cameras and projectors commonly available, that would be 4K digital cinema.

4K digital cinema is 2160x4096 pixels (twice the resolution of 2K cinema, in both directions).

  3. 3K, 4K or even 5K courtesy of RED.
