  1. Today's Wachovia was created when First Union Corporation acquired the former Wachovia Corporation and changed its name to Wachovia. First Union's predecessor, Union National, was founded in 1908 in Charlotte, North Carolina, while the former Wachovia traced its roots to its founding in the town of Winston (later Winston-Salem), North Carolina, in 1879. Through a variety of merger partners over many decades, today's Wachovia can trace its heritage to the nation's first commercial bank, the Bank of North America, chartered by Congress in 1781. Through the links below, you may trace the company's growth from 1958 to the present day.

In creating the new Wachovia Corporation in 2001, the company's leaders noted, "Often mergers have been about getting bigger. This merger is about getting better." Throughout several decades, Wachovia has grown organically and by mergers into a diversified financial service company focused on delivering outstanding customer service, a wide array of products, and sound financial advice for the benefit of customers, communities, shareholders, and employees. The corporate vision is to be "the best, most trusted and admired financial services company" so that all constituencies will be proud to say they are with Wachovia.
