  6. i can speak of pangalay today. at 50 its only now that im having a learning time of west Mindanao . On my second visit to Malamawi, Basilan on reseach of Badjao culture ( for indiefilm/docu material) some few weeks ago, i can only be amazed and amused at how the badjao community can show off, in good faith, via Pangalay. They are a far different picture of tin-can drumming children and youngster hoopers of Manila Streets or coin-diving boat people. I can only appreciate their ability and agility to grow with time. Pangalay has evolved, without taking off, from the traditional pangalay, danced with instrumentals to free-style dancing backed up with freestyle rap-sounding songs and keyboard/audio equipment support. That wedding dance floor for all was so beautiful. Every women (some 50 of them) except me, waited enthusiastically for a chance to dance. The turn to dance is signalled to the next dancer who is appointed through malong thrown to her. Teens and ladies performs in the fashion of showdown. The moms and aunts would display their mastery of the dance as their colleages approve to the claim. There's no envy to the best dancer but appreciation of their hard learned skill introduced at their early age. Grade schoolers (most school leavers on ..ber months) concentrates on the moves from head to toes. Patiently waiting for every dancers performance but discreetly immitating their moves, as if preparing to take the center stage as they spring from where they squat. Truly, pangalay is a rite of passage for young girls. These sea gypsies are proud people of their Pangalay
