  1. Scott L is right, when Marco Polo brought back the egg noodle type pasta it changed the way and type of pasta's the Italian population was making and used to, they made cruder version with the semolina flour, chestnut flour and other grains like buckwheat and spelt, which is from Faro.

There pasta's up until that time were in soups and as a side like potato's nowadays, even covered in honey and dried fruits for dessert, they had been making it there since Roman times, even fried instead of boiled, Marco Polo introduced the Chinese way of making noodles and incorporating eggs into the pasta, they may have invented it around the same time as the Romans did, but there techniques and method are what is known today as the noodles/pasta we eat.

  2. China.

  3. italy

  4. apparently when Marco Polo stayed in China, he came across a dish we now know as Chinese Vermicelli. he took this back to italy, and it fostered into the many types today. try looking at wikipedia, and search for pasta

  5. Even though Italy is most famous for it's pastas...China was the originator with thin noodles brought back from the Orient by Marco Polo.

  6. The common wisdom is that Marco Polo brought pasta from China back with him when he returned to Italy.

The making of pasta requires the use of durum wheat; not just any wheat will do. So if you trace the spread of durum wheat around the world, you will likely be tracing the spread of pasta as well.

  7. I'd say China, or at least Eastern Asia.  But I make my own pasta, and I like to use semolina flour the best, it's the common ingredient in store bought pastas, and I believe that is from Italy.
