What is the hiving off effect?

I'm not literally talking about hives but sort of like the domino effect, how the fall of one leads to the fall of all, and not literally like how when a domino falls it hits the other and causes the other dominos to fall. I'm learning about Roger Williams and his religious conflicts and "hiving off effects." What does it mean by hiving off effect?
