  1. ust a couple of years ago, women's tennis was missing something with both Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin retired.

But the Belgian pair areraring to go as they arrive in Melbourne for the Australian Open, and it would take a brave bettor to choose between them.

The pair have had a long standing rivalry, spanning 25 meetings over 12 years from 1998. And with Cljisters edging the series 13-12 following her fourth round win at Wimbledon last year, all the stats suggest another fierce rivalry throughout 2011.

The Belgians have met eight times in Grand Slam tournaments, three of which were finals. Henin has won all of those, beating Clijsters in straight sets in both the French and US Opens in 2003.

The pair met in the Australian Open final in 2004, with Henin taking the first set 6-3 before Clijsters levelled in the second, winning 6-4. Henin closed out the match 6-3 in the decider, levelling the overall series at 9-9.

Clijsters was knocked out in the third round last year, going out 6-0 6-1 to Nadia Petrova, but it was a rare failure in Melbourne for the former world no.1. In her previous five visits to the Australian Open, she reached at least the semi-finals each time.

Apart from her 2004 success, Henin had never reached an Australian Open final until last year. Going to Melbourne as a wild card entrant, she beat fifth seed Elena Dementieva in the second round and no. 19 seed Petrova in the quarter-finals.

Henin breezed past unseededZhengJie of China in the semi-finals to line up a final date with Serena Williams. The Belgian battled back after losing the first set, levelling the match by taking the second 6-3, but Williams continued her Australian Open dominance as she rounded out the match winning the decider 6-2.

Henin and Clijsters met three times last year, with Clijsters winning all three. She beat her rival in the Brisbane final, winning a deciding set tie-break 8-6, then at another hard court tournament in Miami via another final set tie-break.

The pair last met at Wimbledon in the round of 16 last June, when Henin took the first set 6-2 but Clijsters stormed back to win the next two sets.

Clijsters is a firm favourite to win the women's singles this time, available at around 3.35, whilst Henin is around double those odds.
