I have an upcoming internal job interview for a human resources position. I have been with this company for 3 years, working in operations. I just recently completed my Master's degree in Organizational Development. What are some examples of questions I will most likely be asked? What would be some good resources to read up on to prepare & refresh? How can I sell myself as a the best candidate? I know most of the basic rules of interviewing, such as posture, maintaining eye contact, not using slang or "um" or "like", etc. What other advice can you give me? I really want this job & I think it would be a step in the right direction for my career.

  1. Why do you want to work in HR?  And don't say that you enjoy working with people.  What do you really want to do every day and accomplish week in and week out?  Are you good at it?  How do you know that; can you prove it?

You should find out more about the specific HR opening that you are shooting for.  There are about ten distinct HR specializations (employment, compensation, benefits, employee relations, labor relations, training, HRIS, health and safety, EEO/AAP, etc.) and there are generalists, who may do all of these functions for a specific site; which one do you want to be?  There are levels in HR, from clerical to professional to manager and executive; what level is the job you are looking at and where do you want to be in five years?  Why?

Like any interview, you need an in-depth  understanding of the industry, company, the department, job opening, supervisor of the job and the person you are interviewing with.  I know you went to school, but why should they hire you?  What can you do for them right now, without training or going through a learning curve?

If you can ask a cogent, concise question, email me and I will answer.
