These places suffer because of the loss of young, upwardly moblie workers, or do these places benefit fromthe draining away of surplus labor? In the communities from which migrants depart, is the quality of life improved overall through reduce pressure on local resources or is it damaged overall through the deterioration of social structures and instituions?

  1. it is economics only. if a country is poor ,can't exploit it's resources ,is poorly fed, then losing people to ex migration would be of benefit. on the other hand if it is growing losing people could hinder future growth. for instance many foreigners    come to usa to go to school ,and plan to practice their field back home, but then when they find the greater wage they can get in the usa they stay.then being professionals find no hindrance to immigrate....it is economics only.......tom

  2. Catastrophic! but only for the short-term

4 Years ago many poles left Poland for the UK, and left the country almost empty.  that left shortages of everything. and drove up prices and resulted in the government begging people to come back.

However wages in Poland rose quickly due to the shortages and so did the exchange rate, meaning that the migrants could earn more back in poland again so 80 to 90& have since returned.

Poland is coming back to nromal now. This sort of greed migrancy only causes problems but it does average out wages througout europe.  Wages in the UK are now LESS than the equivalent in POland although UK costs and prices are still much higher.

This migrancy has done short-term good for UK but in long-term has damaged standard of living for the UK working classes but improved those for the polish.

This is very typical patter irrespective of the 2 countries involved.

  3. It is usually the young, the skilled and those with initiative that leave their homeland seeking a better life.

Consider the wave of immigration to the UK from Jamaica in the 1950's - wonderful people (but not made very welcome by the working class English).

Consider some of the later Jamaican immigrants - the Yardies from Kingston, Jamaica, that possibly has the highest murder rate of any city in the world.

Consider the increasing murder rate in London...
