  1. The two major differences are that England is a small crowded country with distances between destinations that are ideal for train travel and unlike America, passenger trains get priority over freight trains; the network is dense and frequent with main routes between cities running at least every half hour and rural lines mostly every hour or two hours or less frequently in some very low populated areas. Most bigger cities have big commuter networks too that run 7 days per week, not just in rush hours. A large percentage of regular rail users are car owners with many stations having

large car parks; road congestion, the high cost of parking in city centres and the London congestion charge makes it inpractical for them to drive; Although inter city trains can be expensive if you start your journey early on a weekday morning without booking in advance, advance purchase tickets and  off peak tickets bought with railcards can make rail travel very cheap indeed. In anycase car ownership though widespread is not as great as in the U.S. You should look at these sites:

  2. In the UK, most trains are powered by overhead cables or third rails with passenger trains. They go quite fast with many city connections and the passenger trains take priority. Every half an hour trains run in every direction, in major stations it can be every 15 minutes. The trains are very usually on time and frequent. The UK is much smaller than the USA so trains are much better to use, the tickets are very cheap and you can have all day/week rail cards.

There are many different train companies depending on where you are in the UK, for example: South West trains, South Eastern Rail, Southern Railway, First Capital connect, First Great Western and many more. All of these are in connection with the government who suply things such as signals, stations and freit trains. Some companies are parteners such as Southern and South Eastern or First Capital connect and first great western.

There are also some high speed trains connecting with other countries such as France and Belgium. These trains go under the channel, an example of these is Eurostar trains.
