  1. its not quite as important as being a bit more specific

  2. We no longer live in a world where each country lives in its own bubble.  We live in a global economy, where people all over the world are bidding for the same products we consume on a daily basis.  This is an important factor in the recent increases in food and oil prices.  Although demand may not be increasing here much, it is in places like China and India, so the increases may be hard to understand for someone who does not pay attention to global affairs.

Many firms are taking advantage of the global market, and are selling to people across the world.  If you want to have a better chance at a nice job in the future, it is very important to have an understanding of different cultures and global affairs.  On the other hand, someone who has the attitude that they don't need to care about anything outside the borders of the United States has virtually no chance of becoming a business leader in the future.

Finally, I believe that we have a moral imperative to be aware of the different life conditions around the globe.  Although we, in our life of comfort, rarely experience such catastrophes such as famine or plague, there are millions of people around the world who suffer through these every day.  Billions live in poverty that we cannot imagine with absolutely no chance of improving their lot.  Millions of people lack basic human rights, such as the right to not be senselessly murdered.  To ignore these people, or to dismiss them as not of our concern, only worsens the problem, as indifference is implicit support for these tragedies.

    That's just my opinion...
