  1. El cinco de mayo it's the annyversary of the battle of Puebla, 1860's el 16 de Septiembre it's the annyversary of the beggining of the independence war, 1810, =P

  2. Almost everybody said everything.

    I'll answer anyway.

16 de Septiembre (september 16) is mexican independence aniversary, as important for us (mexicans) as July 4 for americans.

5 de Mayo (may 5) La Batalla de Puebla (Battle of Puebla). After Mexico got independence, France asked Mexico to pay for loses to french companies that were in Mexico while the war. French army invaded Mexico. At Puebla city took place one battle that Mexico won. It was important because everybody suposed french army to be stronger than mexican.

But Cinco de Mayo celebretion in Mexico is NOT important; it is more celebrated in the USA. In my opinion, it is because neither migrants form Mexico nor native americans know well mexican history. And, yes, the most interested are beer companies and bars.

  3. , 5 de Mayo Mexican Militia under General Zaragoza defeated the French army at the battle of Pueblo,

September 16th is Mexican Independence day, "El Grito de Dolores" was proclaimed by Padre Hidalgo.

For you know it alls,  that Mexico Dose not Celebrate El Cinco de Mayo, Go down to the bottom of the page and click on the Mexican flag, then in answer search type in "Cinco de Mayo en Mexico" and read the answers, they are in Spanish.

  4. well, cinco de mayo is the battle of puebla.  it represents mexico kicking the french's butts, but then a few days later the french turned around and beat the mexicans again.  this holiday is large in puebla, but not really in other places.  in fact, it's fairly true that cinco de mayo is more of an american holiday!  we celebrate it WAY more than mexicans do.

however, sept. 16th is the mexican independence from spain, and that is a very large holiday in mexico.  it is really most celebrated at night on the 15th.

sept 16 would be like the US's 4th of july.  and the 5th of may is....perhaps like....gettysburg??  not really...but that might be the closest we have.  kind of like...the underdog wins...but then gets beat in the end.

  5. I think the other ppl have given very thorough and accurate answers. Cinco de mayo is almost meaningless for us mexicans.... it used to be a holiday in Mexico and we still have the day present at school in history lessons, but it stopped being an official holiday many years ago (i.e. we don't get the day off at work or at school). I didn't know the story about how it started being a big date in the USA, it was an interesting thing to learn..... I never quite understood why the americans would mind about a holiday of OURS (Mexico) and would make such a big deal of it......

However, 16 de septiembre IS very big in here, it's a mandatory holiday and we have a big party on the night of the 15 and then a military parade on 16 morning, it's a big occasion and people get together with friends and family, organize big parties, etc..... It's the most important holiday in the year because it's when Mexico actually became a country. As they said, 5 de mayo was just a battle in a small town in the middle of an invasion/war...... no biggie.

  6. Cinco de Mayo has no significance in the history of Mexico.  This date is only a date of importance for Beer distributors and Bar operators in the USA to promote sells.

!6 September is Mexico's Independence anniversary and thus the Birthday of Mexico.  It is the equivalent to 4th of July for the USA.

Cinco de Mayo is just the anniversary of a battle won by Mexico in a war against France that was fought in a city called Puebla.  Mexico lost the war, but they won that one battle.

Cinco de Mayo got notoriety in the USA after a competing Gang bands got drunk and did a battle of their own in a public park in Los Angeles in that date.  The following year LA's police was cautious and put special protection on the park.  Following the negative news of the first battle and the subsequent yearly preparations the date got famous and soon popular in the USA.

Nobody in Mexico thinks of Cinco de Mayo.  Well, that is not quite true; resort towns in Mexico, especially those catering to USA tourist make special events around Cinco de Mayo trying to capture those dollars.  Places like Cancun, might held parties and such around Cinco de Mayo to make American Tourists happy.
