There is no such thing as a professional "ecologist." All sorts of professionals deal with aspects of ecology. For instance, a field biologist might study a certain ecological system, or people in various professions (engineering, law, biology, chemistry) might contribute to an environmental impact report.

Being an 'ecologist' would either involve working for an environment agency, which isn't very well paid, or being an academic at a university. Which isn't very well paid.

Big construction companies sometimes require people with qualifications in ecology to research on the effects of, say, building a new shopping centre. But this is contract work rather than a full-time job.
