What is the incoming mail server on mac mail?

I'm trying to set up my mail account on mac os x and first it wants me to state my account type then my incoming mail server. what does this mean? I have a hotmail address, is that something i need to enter? thanks

  1. You need to use a mail account which provides IMAP or POP3 servers from which you can fetch your email.

    Hotmail does not supply such servers. You cannot use OS X Mail.app with it.

    You can pay for the commercial version of Hotmail, which does have POP3 servers.
