I am making a quilt for the first time, self-taught, I am wondering what the material is inside of the quilt. I have the fabric for the outside and everything else, but can't figure out what goes inside of it to save my life.

  1. It may be cotton or poly fil. It's called batting and is available at fabric stores, JoAnns and even Wal-Mart. It's available in several weights (thicknesses) and pre-cut sizes. Some stores have it on rolls and cut it for you.

  2. That cotton-type stuff is indeed cotton I do believe.

  3. Where ever you purchased the material for the outside they will have 'batting' or other materials for you to use on the inside of your quilt.

    Have Fun!!!

  4. It's called "batting" and you can but it at most fabric stores.  It comes in either cotton or synthetic, it will be rolled up almost like a sleeping bag, and it will be in a clear plastic bag.  You buy it in sizes like if you were buying bedsheets, and you can buy it in different weights.

I often just use an old blanket when I make a quilt, a great way to recycle/reuse and a blanket makes a nice weight.  I've also used old table clothes and sheets inside a quilt for a lighter weight quilt when finished.

  5. The "stuffing" for quilts is called batting.  You can find it at most sewing/fabric stores, quilting shops, and many online vendors.  Batting can be cotton, wool, polyester, silk and any number of combinations.  It also comes in many different thicknesses.  You'll have to do a bit of nosing around to pick the right one for your quilt project.  Good luck!!!

  6. Most of the answers were right: batting.

It can be cotton or polyester. The craft shop should have it in the size you need ... just cut smaller if necessary. Also you will need to quilt it - sew stitching lines every six inches, to hold your top, batting, & backing all together in your finished quilt. Or you can tye it together with yarn or embroidery floss.

I suggest going to your local library for a book on quilting, or get one from a friend if possible, it will help you. And I think it is wonderful you are making a quilt.

  7. You can get it at your craft store.  In the US you can probably find it in the fabric dept at a store like Walmart.  Old quilts were made using cotton batting, but now I think it is a polyester batting.

  8. Batting, Poly-fil, etc.  These are what you are talking about.  My mom is a quilter.  She likes using solid-colored (make it a color that won't interfere with the outside), heavy flannel for her "filler."  She's made baby quilts for my friends and they adore it--especially if it is going on a wall for decoration.  Of course, most of the time, she gets it on the dollar/yard table--not sure if any would be on sale now.

Good luck and have fun!  My first quilt was a gift to my in-laws--they loved it and I loved making it for them!

  9. I am pretty sure it is called batting.
