  1. There are a number of facilities where persons with disabilities may live.

There are government funded schools, such as schools for the deaf, or schools for the blind (Indiana School for the Deaf, Missouri School for the Blind, etc. etc.) These are known as residential schools, where the children can either commute from home, or they live at the school in the dormitories.

There are also similar residential facilities for persons with developmental disabilities (mental retardation, etc.) or with mental illnesses. Sometimes persons with severe mental disabilities will live in the state hospital.

Nowadays there is more and more of an effort to get persons with disabilities out of the institutions and living in mainstream society, such as in group homes where they have social workers and/or personal care attendants to help them. Children with disabilities are mainstreamed into the school system with special education teachers, tutors, interpreters, etc. to provide assistance as needed.

Many people with disabilities are perfectly capable of living independently in the community - they live in their own homes, have jobs, families, etc. like everyone else.

  2. Vocational Rehabilitation? Maybe?
