of a lifetime, but struggling to find health travel insurance for a relative with cancer. Does anyone know what cruise ship policy is? We need to arrange some insurance just in case she needs any help. Any experienced advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. If you're a resident of the USA and the relative is also a resident than you should look for travel insurance very soon.  Most travel insurance policies (not all) will offer a "waiver of pre-existing medical conditions" if you meet the following conditions:

    1.  buy the insurance within 10 - 21 days following your first trip payment; and

    2.  are physically able to travel on the day you're buying the insurance; and

    3.  you insure your trip to it's full pre-paid cost.

There are 3 plans that use the final payment date instead of the first payment date.  With those plans purchase of the insurance has to be made prior to or within 24 hours of your final payment date.

Once you've qualified for the waiver than the insurance company will not use that exclusion as the basis to deny a claim.

  2. The travel insurance has nothing to do with the Cruise ship, but you are very wise to get the right one.

I'm an ex travel/cruise rep and you would be amazed at the number of people who do not take out adequate insurance, or lie about pre-existing medical conditions with sometimes horrendous financial consequences.

Try this company for a quote, but there are others so shop around, please be 100% honest with your application ANY deviation can make the policy worthless.

  3. I have told this to so many people on this website man. just wait for the insurance fairy to leave insurance under your pillow...

  4. It depends what country you live in.

While you may get cover it will almost certainly exclude pre-existing conditions.

Even if you could get specialist cover it would be so expensive as to not be viable.

One option is to travel in Europe where you will be entitled to free medical care. You will not be covered for repatriation though.

You could try contacting a charity for the particular kind of cancer your relative has. They might be able to help.
