i saw several differnet shapes and symbols ... americans ,british and for europe ??? which one is the offical one

  1. I don't think there is an official one.

    There are only two, the US (zigzag line), and the European (rectangle)

    .


  2. The rectangle and zig-zag line are pretty interchangable. Decide which one you prefer and stick with it.

    I have always used the zig-zag, it suggests resistance more than a rectangle!

  4. Well, if you go to the Wikipedia link Bill provided, and look at the illustrations, of symbols, you'll see that the "IEC" in "Resistor symbols (Europe, IEC)" is a link to a page about the IEC, where it says;

    "The International Electrotechnical Commission[1] (IEC) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental international standards organization that prepares and publishes International Standards"

    So it seems to me that the IEC (rectangle) symbol is the "international symbol". (though we in the US often use a the zig-zag symbol)
