What is the key to experiencing another country on a deeper level than "tourist"?

Meet the locals. Talk to them. Try and pick up at least parts of the language. I also think volunteering is a great idea. Just don't make it self-righteous and/or imperialistic.

tourists are more of a sight-seer kind, try to learn something about the country while there. was there ever a world war that  the country fought in? was there ever a natural disaster that wiped out a ton of land or people?
