I am playing in only my second USTA tournament, and I'm still a little bit nervous, but could someone tell me how to come over that? Also, someone answer the title question too. Thanks. :)

  1. Don't focus so much on the end result, instead focus on each point.  As long as you choose the right shots and the right times winning will happen.  You basically have two errors: errors of execution and errors of shot selection.  You are going to make execution errors.  You can't avoid it.  Let this ease your anxiety.  Focus on avoiding errors of shot selection.  Remember, the right shot choice is what is within your ability, not necessarily the flashiest shot.  Tennis is won on lots of good shots, not a few great shots.

  2. I have won boys 14's tournaments before and i can tell you that what you need to do is be agressive with your shots. In this age group, many people tend to get tight and hit balls short. You have to attack the ball and come to net and force them to try and hit a difficult passing shot. Also, since most people in the division do not have very big serves, it is a huge advantage to have a big serve. I am only 5 foot 1 and still have a huge serve so no matter what people say, height doesn't matter. Also, many players in the 14's will have a single weakness that is rather easy to exploit. Very few people in the 14's have become so good that they don't have a single weakness. In the warmups, hit every shot you possibly can. Shots to their forehand, backhand, slice shots, shortballs, dropshots, topspin, volleys, overheads, all possible weaknesses of your oponents. It is always best to go into a match with a basic strategy of how you are going to win. and finding a weakness is the best way to figure out that strategy. For your nerves, the only thing you can possible do is play more tournaments and get more match experience to become comforable with your shots. Joining a ladder at a local club or playing on some kind of team are all great ways to get match experience. no matter what people tell you, there is no way to just close your eyes and make the nerves go away. trust me. i know. Good luck in your tournaments and i hope this helps :)

  3. the only key to winning is being better and more confident than the other players. To not be nervous just image that its just a regular tennis match and you dont win anything and that you're just playing against someone at your school or your friend.
