  1. I went to the same grade school as JimZ.  I still remember reading a book about the life of one of the Lakota, Black Elk Speaks in High School.  It is old enough to be in public domain and is available for free to read on the internet.  http://books.google.com/books?id=FkhBUAB...

  2. Read "Fools Crow" and "Wisdom and Power", both by Thomas Mails, both describing the life, experiences, philosophies, and spiritual tools of Frank Fools Crow, one of the foremost Lakota holy men of the 20th century.

  3. Although I don't like helping people with their homework, at least you were forthright about it, so here are a few links to get you started (and don't forget to check out your local library!).

Good luck, and don't forget to credit me on your report!  ;)

  4. i like the second answer, there is an awful lot to try and answer in a simple answer to a question like this.

First, are you wanting to know their culture as it is now, or their traditioinal cultures before Eoropean incursion.

some traditions stay but there is always a blending of cultures and certain traditions are lost or changed.

  5. Lakota are Sioux Indians and lived on the plains, the reason for the Buffalo slaughter, to rid the people of food etc.

Now you can do your own home work.

  6. I grew up in Rapid City in the heart of Lakota territory.  It was an amazing culture.  They learned to ride horses in a couple generations to become some of the best horsemen and soldiers in the world.  They were extremely formidable.  They were not a match for modern weopons and guns.  Today, they generally live on reservations.  The grade school I attended had more native americans than any non reservation school in the country yet only one graduated from high school.  It isn't from lack of intelligence.  I believe there is pressure to not be "white."  It is unfortunate that they have such pressure to not join the modern world because that is their way out of the reservation.  Reservations are not very conducive to accomplishments and I think there are lots of people that are dissatisfied with their life.
