  1. "The rain in Spain, lies mainly in the plains."

  2. The geography in Spain varies greatly, as some people went into great detail to explain.  Southern Spain has been used a great deal for American Western films, as the topography is similar.

I want to add that the second answerer, quoting poetry by Alan Jay Lerner, made an error in stating that the rain is mainly on the plain.  The truth is, the plains in Central Spain are quite dry.  Rain is more prevalent in the mountains.  It is a grave error to use a Broadway show as your weather expert.

    :)

  3. In the north you have the Pyrenees as border to France with peaks well above 2000m (6000 ft), to the west the Cantabrian Mountains, which descent steeply to the Gulf of Biscaya. South of it start the plains of Casilla-Leon, which still are at 600-800 m (1800 - 2400 ft). In the center, just north of Madrid (about the geographical center of the Iberian peninsula) You find mountains about 2000 m abov sealevel (you can go skiing out of Madrid by a suburbtrain). Madrid itselve is at about 600 m. To the south of Madrid are the plains of Castilla-La Mancha, which slowly descend to Andalucía and the Atlantic coast in the south. East of Madrid are also the plains of Castilla -La Mancha, which descent abruptely to the  Mediterranean Sea.

The northern part of the Mediterranen coast, the Costa Brava (wild coast) is a change between abrupt rocky parts and small sandy bays. The only large bay is the bay of Roses (Rosas in castellano).

The part north of Barcelona is called Maresme with long sandy beaches right into the northern parts of Barcelona.

South of Barcelona it starts with sandy beaches, followed by the Mountains of Garraf, which really break upruptely to the sea. After that, the coast is called Caosta Daurada (dorada - golden coast) because of the beaches.

The whole coastline down the Mediterranean Sea is a follow-up of rough mountains and beaches.

In total, Spain is not too frindly to the traffic because of those rough changes. You have a lot of railroad lines which have to climb up to more than 1000m highth (e.g. the line from Valencia to Teruel, 120km/80 miles) and then descend rapidly again to a plain.

Truck drivers e.g. avoid the highway from Madrid to Alicante because of long steep parts descending to the vally of river Tajo and after the bridge up again. They rather take the longer way via Toledo and then on the National Road down to the coast.

  4. Even though it's a small country, the landscape of Spain varies about as much as it does in the U.S.! The south is warmer (boiling hot in the summer) and dry, while the northern coast is cooler, misty and mountainous. You can find several mountain ranges in Spain, such as the Pyrenees in the northeast.

  5. The Spanish mainland is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south and east, by the Cantabric Sea that includes the Bay of Biscay to the north, and by the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal to the west.

Try the Spanish Department of Tourism
