  1. Increasingly in today's world, English is the language of business, commerce, technology, education and science. For that reason, and the power of the US as a superpower, English is at least ONE of the languages of international diplomacy. Historically, French was the language of diplomacy for several centuries, until the formation of the United Nations after World War Two. Treaties and important communication between countries were translated into French, to guarantee that the words had the same meaning to all governments and diplomats. That is still done, at least partly.  The work of the U.N. is now conducted in five official languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. All documents and communications are translated into all five languages. Simultaneous translations at meetings are conducted by trained interpreters and translators in those languages and in dozens more, depending on the speakers.

English can be a difficult language for some to learn; however, the vast majority of people in the world now seem to want to learn that language, to get ahead in the world of today. Many European and Asian countries, especially, just assume that students will study English as well as their native language. More and more students now study Japanese and Chinese in Asia, and fewer study French or Russian.

  2. Those who said French are wrong -- it's on the way out, and has been since Talleyrand (OK, that's an exaggeration!  Since World War 2 at least.)  Clearly,  English.  Try going to ANY diplomatic posting around the world with just French, versus going with just English, and see how you do.

    Chinese

Traditionally, French has been the international language in Politics.
