Hi.

I'm over 6 feet tall and over 200lbs. I'm interested in purchasing a scooter. It seems allot of them are for shorter people and allot of them have a max capacity weight of around 200lbs. I would like to sometimes I may want a passenger so I would need at least 300lbs.

Please help.

  1. I live in the Uk and the law here is simple. You cannot carry a pillion until you have passed your full test.

A 50 cc moped has very little power and is only designed for city driving. If you want to take a passenger or go any distance, it is better to go for something more powerful.

My old 125 cc bike could take a pillion passenger and still manage speeds up to 45 mph. It was quite heavy (most people assumed it was a 250cc) so I know a 125 cc scooter would be able to manage it too.

  2. How old are you that is a  important thing here. A 50 will take  you around ok but not with a  passenger. Look at Kymco's if you are old enough. They have many sizes. The only thing better on the market than a Kymco is Piaggio and Vespa. Kymco is rated higher than  even Honda and Suzuki.

  3. Ignore the poster who said a 50cc scooter makes about 1.5hp, only restricted european mopeds in the 60's made that little power. Modern day scooters make 4-5hp for a 4-stroke 50cc and 5-7hp for a 2-stroke.

If you're looking to buy a fairly new scooter, the Honda 50's (Jazz and Ruckus) both have smaller cockpits. I'd say 6 feet is the max. They're also 4-strokes so a 200lbs rider is going to top out around 40mph. Also, they're only rated to 220lbs.

I'd take a look at Yamaha's offerings....the Zuma is a 2-stroke scooter that seems to have a little more legroom than the Honda's so it might be a good fit for your size and weight. 2-strokes are much better with passengers than 4-strokes. Yamaha also makes the Vespa-esque Vino and the unique C3 which is quite practical.

Besides these 2 makers, you've got the Italian brands which are generally about $1000 more...mostly for the prestige. The Aprilia SR50 is a fast and fairly large 2-stroke but it's pricey at $4g.

There's also Kymco, a Taiwan brand. Kymco makes decent scooters but I'd ignore the fanboy who says they are rated higher than Honda & Yamaha. Kymco's top of the line 50cc (the Super 9) actually uses the identical engine to the Honda Dio....a scooter Honda sold here in the late 90's. It's a good engine but it's old technology and I hate to support Kymco's theft of this technology. Kymco and Honda were affiliated for several decades until the mid-90's when Honda gave them the boot (Kymco primarily assembled Honda's for asian markets). Since then, Kymco has gone on to basically steal Honda's designs (since they know exactly how they're built). If you visit Kymco's international website you can see they make a carbon copy of the Honda Jazz and several other Honda's. They don't sell these bikes here for copyright reasons but they Kymco still uses a copy of Honda's Clean4U Dio engine in their Super 9 scooter. The upside is that you can get parts from your local Honda dealer for decades to come.

Lastly, don't buy a Chinese scooter. They're all horrible. You can't get parts when they break down and they mostly use ancient Honda technology from the 70's. Virtually every 150cc Chinese scooter uses a clone of Honda's old GY6 engine. The worst part about these scooters is that assembly is horrible so parts are constantly coming loose and falling off. Any money you save up front you'll lose in repair costs and in lower (or non-existant) resale value.

  4. The problem you are going to have is the 50cc size.  50cc are street legal and require no motorcycle license to drive, they are limited in the size of the horsepower by law. If you want a scooter that will move out of it's own way, you will need to jump up to at least a 125cc then you will need a license. The 50cc are designed basically for small people. Unfortunately they don't make a big frame scooter with a 50cc engine.

  5. They are only 49CC... about 1.5 HP... how much weight do you think that engine is going to pull? Not much, but most are rated to about 325 pounds. Maybe a good thing for you is look at a 150CC.. the long ones and they are fun and will run about 50 to 60 MPH.
