What do you mean by this year.

Upto 31/3/2009 , you can file return for Asst Year  2007-08.(FY 2006-07 ) (Although there is chance of penalty u/s 271F of Rs 10,000. But that is not imposed if there is genuine grievance.

Upto 31/3/2009 you can file return for Asst Yr 2008-09 (FY 2007-08) without any penalty fear.

Upto 31/3/2010 , you can file return for Asst Yr 2008-09

With extensions, you can file up to October 15, 2008.

If you miss the cutoff, you can file later, but you may be subject to additional penalties and interest, if you owe a balance.

For financial year 2007-08 or Assessment Year 2008-09 the last date was 31st July 2008

U/s 139 if your total income in respect of which you are assessable under this Act during the previous year exceeded the maximum amount which is not chargeable to income-tax then you should furnish a return of your income during the previous year, in the prescribed form on or before the due date

U/s 234A- Where the return of income is furnished after the due date, or is not furnished, the assessee shall be liable to pay simple interest at the rate of 1 % for every month or part of a month on the amount of the tax due as per the return

U/s 271F- If a person who is required to furnish a return of his income, as required under sub-section (1) of section 139 or by the provisos to that sub-section, fails to furnish such return before the end of the relevant assessment year, the Assessing Officer may direct that such person shall pay, by way of penalty, a sum of Rs. 5000/
