  1. Late 17th century? Well, that's not the 1700s because that's the 18th century. So we're talking the 1600s. And something that would have weakened the Puritan clergy. Well, I don't know about Europe, but how about we turn to February 1692 - May 1693 New England. Particular the town of Salem, Massachusetts. Nineteen people were sentenced to death by hanging, one was pressed to death for refusing to issue a plea, and a definite four died in prison (though they may have been joined by thirteen others). Most of the accused were from the area around Salem, but others came from New Hampshire and Maine (well, Massachusetts as Maine was a part of the Massachusetts Bay colony at the time). Of course I'm talking the infamous Salem Witchcraft Trials.

  2. The French Revolution (1789-1799) led to the deaths of the French nobility.

  3. The council of trent?

  4. ~Yes you do need help.  Serious help.  Just what in the h**l is the question?  You need help in learning how to ask one.

I'm guessing that any 'judicial event' that resulted in a verdict of guilty in a capital case led to at least one death, be it in Europe, in China, in the New World, in Africa or in most any other venue. Death by burning would have inflamed the defendant at the very least.

You asked about the 17th century.  I'd steer clear of the French Revolution in the late 1780s.  Duh.  It's almost 100 years outside your time frame.

Of course, the Council of Trent is at least 50 years before your time frame.

Woe is you.  Might have to do some reading on this one.

Aha, Puritan clergy.   You've now narrowed it down to two continents.  Keep trying, and look to Salem (or London or the Netherlands).

  5. This isn't the most clear question.  But since you're referring to the late 17th century and the Puritan clergy, you're very likely looking for the Salem Witch Trials (1692).
