  1. bikes: titanium is alloyed with vanadium and aluminum

    you will see 3/2.5 titanium

    and 6/4 titanium

3/2.5 means 3% aluminum and 2.5% vanadium alloy with ti.

6/4 means 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium and the rest is titanium.

6/4 is more expensive because it is stiffer, and is stronger than pure ti.

pure ti is actually very soft, it bends, yet resistant to fracturing, very similar strength properties to steel but much lighter.  which is not good for bikes because too much flex is wasted energy. so they stiffen it by alloying it.  6/4 is stiffer than 3/2 so the material can be thinner thus lighter.

an average ti bike is around 1000 dollars per foot of tubing.

  2. You probably won't find an answer here as Ti used for bicycles is always alloyed, and it is my guess very few people here buy Ti on the open market to make into tubing.
