I live in Missouri. I am 17. My boyfriend of over two years just recently moved to Texas. His parents have agreed to allow me to move in with them. If my mother chooses to stop me, by law, can she? Is there any paper work or things that need to be done since I would be moving to a different state? How can I get more information on what needs to be done?

  1. From what I've found out, you have to be 18, unless you marry or join the military.  In either of those cases you can be 17 years old.

  2. 18 and you're on your own. Wait a year and your mom will not stop you, because you will be legal. But if you choose to move out now. She has the right to stop you.

  3. No, you cannot move out without your parents' permission. To go to another state, you should get your mother to give a Power of Attorney to the family you will be living with. Your mother CAN stop you, unless you get emancipated (and that's much harder than most think). If you want more information, you can contact an attorney. Civil Legal Aid can refer you to one.

  4. It varies by state, but by 17 you can generally do what you want.

But if you plan to go to college, remember you can't expect to get money from your mom to pay for it.
