What is the legal tobacco (smoking) age in north carolina?

my friends got in trouble with the cops for smoking a black and mild but there all 16.

Ive heard many times that its legal to be smoking at 16 but you have to be 18 to actually purchase the smokes.

is this just a myth?

or can you legally smoke at 16?

My state and city used to be 18 to buy but there were no laws on the books about how old you have to be to smoke so baiscally once you obtained them you were all good. I dont think states have addressed this but many cities or counties have made their own ruels and they can give underage kids tickets.

It really depends on the state law and if you go to your state government website you might be able to look that up, but as far as I know, most states require you to be 18 to smoke or use tobacco products. However, most state laws make some provision for minors to drink alcohol in private settings as long as a parent or guardian is there to supervise them, and I think there might be similar provisions for smoking too, but don't quote me on that, look it up and find out what your specific state law says.
