I want to play guitar.

I think I want an electric guitar.

I like how they look better.

And without the amp I could play like More Than Words on it and have it sound good/the same right?

  1. You won't be able to hear anything without an amp. "More Than Words" is an acoustic song and that's actually what you should start on, since it helps build up your fingers. You have to press the strings down harder that's why.

  2. If you play an electric guitar without an amp it will not sound good! Depending on your budget, go for an electro acoustic (an acoustic with built-in electrics.)

You have to make a choice. Steel strings or nylon. Nylon strings are easier on the fingers, steel strings give a brighter tone, but hurt more. Also, you cannot have long, pretty nails on your left hand. If you're serious, go to your local music shop and check out what's available in your price range. If you casn take sa friend who plays, and get them to play a few for you. Try holding a few yourself,  fingering a chord or two to feel the pain. Your final choice has to be the one that you like the sound and feel of, that is in your price range.

If no friend, ask an assistant. When/if you find one, you can buy an amp later.

Hope this helps, but go to my profile and email me if I can help further.

  3. you would be much better off getting an acoustic guitar.  you will be able to hear much more sound from an acoustic over an electric.  I started with an electric & no amp, but it was a huge mistake.  I wanted to be cool and play rock songs.  well you gotta learn to play before you can look cool.

I've had my acoustic now for about 10 years.  I try to play every day and always continue learning.

also, More Than Words, was an acoustic song.

I believe the necks on all guitars are about the same length.  the frets are spaced perfectly to create the different notes and scales.  there are usually about 15-17 frets above the body of an acoustic guitar, and another 4-6 that go into the body.  electric guitars frets typically go to 21-23 above the body.  this allows for much higher pitched notes you hear in guitar solos.

I don't have my guitars here to measure, but i would guess about 24 inches for the neck, another 12-15 inches for the body.
