  1. Normal sugar level for diabetics and non-diabetics are the same -- 90-110.

Your blood sugar will "spike" after a meal, but it should be below 120 about 90 minutes AFTER you eat.

A "fasting" reading (like about 10 hours with no food -- say 8PM to 6AM) may be considerably lower, maybe 70-90.  But many diabeitcs have a "liver dump".  Your liver dumps sugar in the middle of the night.  So your 10-hour-fast sugar will be higher (120-140) than you daily pre-meal readings (90-120).

The doctor "has the right" to suggest diabetic medication on the first day he meets you.  In fact, it is not a "right" but a DUTY on his part to INSIST that you begin proper medications on the very first visit you have with him.

Diabetets is a very dangerous disease. It has drastic and far-reaching side effects, many of which are fatal, and all of which will cause some kind of damage to yoru system.

Diabates causes or aggravates ALL of these:

    High blood pressure

    High Cholesterol

Nerve damage, failure to heal wounds

Amputation of toes, feet, fingers, and hands

    Emotional mood swings

    Kidney disease

    Blindness

    Sexual dysfunctions

    miscarriage

    Birth defects

Given this, there is one school of thought that says that ALL diabetics should be treated with insulin shots from Day One, with the goal of erducing and eventually eliminating the shots as the patient learns better  dietary and lifestyle control.

Note that most Type 2 diabetcs eventually require insulin injections after 5-7 years.

  2. if your fasting sugars are consistently over 120, and your A1C is greater than 6.5...you need to be taking medications.

  3. 80-120 is normal.
