  1. It all depends how heavy your usage honestly.

I had a VIAO that last me 10 years until I had to change my hard disk last year. Usage for VIAO is only 1 to 2 hours a day on average.

I had a another notebook (wouldn't wanna name it here) which only last me 2.5 years. I literally changed 2x motherboard, 2x LCD screen, 1x fan, 1x keyboard, 2x harddisk, believe me not, I used this notebook for literally 14 hours a day on average.

So it all depends but I reckon an average notebook that can last you 3 to 5 years, its time to change, cos you are at least 6 to 10 times behind others in term of new apps and soft/hard wares.

  2. It really depends on how you treat it, clean the laptop regular, and dont drop it, also to get maximum life from a laptop you need a cooler.

If you treat it well you could get 5 years.

Computers normally stay in one place anyway i have had mine for 7 years now, and i cleanit once a month and it still is working great, so it really depends on how much you use it.

Normally a computer lasts longer than a laptop, but it really depends on how you treat it.

  3. Well, technically a laptop IS a normal computer, but I believe you're looking for the comparison of a laptop and desktop.

There are many factors in determining how long your laptop will last. The number one determination is your willingness to take care of it. If you clean your keyboard and monitor consistently, it'll probably last longer. Taking those air spray cans to remove the dust and debris inside to keep the fan free of particles and clogging the vent will make sure it doesn't overheat. Have a casing to prevent from scratches and falls.

The second largest factor will probably be your usage. The more you use it, the more wear it accumulates. Now this part may more directly answer the question - the longevity of the laptop. Because the parts are constantly in travel (assuming you use your laptop to go places), it will most likely wear faster than the average desktop. They do stand the risk of dropping, more likely than a desktop would, but that depends on how well you take care of it.

The next largest factor would be upgrades. If you "maxed out" the computer during purchase, it will definitely have a shorter life than a desktop. Your desktop has more slots, and you can potentially change the motherboard when it does get obsolete - something you usually can't do with a laptop.

The last factor is probably the manufacturer brand and model. Some laptops are BUILT for all terrain, meaning heavy duty chassis, shock protection, etc. The case may be built to withstand drops, where a desktop is built to stand in one place (which if it drops, stuff may break). Other manufacturers may make their products out of the cheapest plastics to make manufacture cheaper and more available to the public, meaning quicker wear.

All I can really say is do some research. The cheaper the laptop, the cheaper the parts, generally.

  4. Laptop - About 2 Years

    Normal - 4-5 years

It also depends on how much u use it and how u treat it.

  5. it depends... but normally normal computers last longer than laptops...

  6. In short they are the same. Let me explain. It depends on how you look at it. I ask all my clients the following.

Does your computer do everything you want it to do?

    Does it do it quickly?

If not can it be fixed cheaply with hardware or software upgrades or updates?

If not check out buying another computer.

There are different ways of looking at life span of a computer. This is the most practical one. An adequately appointed desktop and laptop should last about the same time (barring hardware failure). I have seen places still running some 386, 486 and earlier pentium models. Some systems just don't die (10 to 15 years). Others just outlive the warranty.

If you are into keeping up to the Joneses the life span can be as little as 6 months to a year.

Gamers are always looking for more power and are the most aggressive computer buyer. They usually need upgrades every time a new game comes out or try to install a new game. This is because the gaming industry lives on the cutting edge of technology and must do so to keep the gaming public interested in their games.

I know this sounds vague but it is the nature of your quesion.

    Hope this helps.
