From what I heard Port Moresby is a very rough place full of criminal gangs called "rascals" with houses being surrounded by cyclone wire and barbed wire fences and foreigners are looked at as targets for robbery, rapes and murder.

hmmm I wouldn't suggest it.

I have a mate from NZ that has a wife in PNG - he's come over to Cairns to apply for his spouse visa.   (you can not apply for a visa in the same country you are applying for)  So far he's been stuck here for 2 months.  Visa and the PNG Consulate only take bribes.  The more money you pay - the quicker your visa is granted.  

Only way to really get into PNG is find a job first, get them to sponsor you with a work permit, then you can live and work there.  If you leave your job, you have to leave PNG immediately.  

Once my mate gets his visa (which should be in the next month) it still does not allow him to work in PNG, only his wife is allowed too - weird laws.

Also they do no have any government assistance there.  This is why people get robbed daily.

Think twice about it - there are plenty of other places to work and live in this world.....

I wouldn't go there to live and work.

Would you like living in a compound behind razor wire with ferocious dogs roaming the perimeter day and night to keep the "rascals" out?

Friends came back home a couple of years ago on holiday.

She and the kids stayed in Australia, refused to return to PNG.

He had to go back to complete his work contract, then high tailed it out of there. Never to return, he said.

Unfortunately people from around the world do not know much about papua new guinea. contrary to popular belief it is not a dangerous place!!! seriously tho i dont know who started all the rubbish. port moresby is the only place where you have to take some precauctions but as long as you go places with people you know, dont flaunt your cash, and stay in the good areas you will be FINE. its just like any other city.

I hate how people think that just because there are a small number of "rascals" in major cities that the WHOLE island is like that. seriously tho get real. as long as you have connections you will be fine, if you are in areas where rascals are in plenty.

The major cities to live in where you can still live a life free of worry is lae or madang in my opinion. they are modern cities, with banks,malls,restaurants,resorts,parks,be... hangout places,clubs, etc. also especially madang is very  safe and the city is having a big boom because of the gold they are finding there. As long as you take the normal precautions like in ANY other majoy city you will be fine.

The major cities in Papua new guinea are Port moresby,Lae,Mt Hagen,Goroka, and Madang.

it has the best info and people who are actually from the country giving you there opinions and honest answers.

People seem to think that everything they hear about the country is true and I guarantee telling you they are not.

The country in magnificent beaches,mountains,village life, city life, and the country is the most heterogenous(most cultures and ethnicities) in the WORLD.
