  1. Why do you only want a Trek? There are nicer bikes out there.

    Anyway, weight is only one part of the equation and should be considered last, not first, in your efforts. I have bikes that weigh close to 30 pounds and they are infinitely more rideable than some of those sub-20 pounders made today.

    Trying to go out and buy performance technology is a mistake that many people make without understanding what the technology is and how to apply it. I design the stuff for a living and see what is coming down the road in a few years but none of it impresses me enough to give up a finely tuned and well maintained 25 pound steel framed bike... which is what I normally ride.

    I suggest that you hone your riding skills first on a good quality middle-of-the-road bike then once you have achieved a good threshold of ability- go and get that techie stuff.
