My brothers and I don't know each other at all. What is the likelihood that there may be some type of secret leakage after 20 years that my brothers have a sister that my mom is keeping a secret?

Should I tell them if they don't know about me?

  1. Whether your brothers know depends on their family. In my family, it would be an open secret. In other families, it would be closely guarded. Some lady asked Dear Abby the other day about informing her sons of their secret sister in a letter to be opened after her death.

You didn't give much info. Do you know your mother? How does she feel about it? Why is she keeping it a secret? Would she be willing to tell them and arrange a meeting... it is her secret to tell, after all, so she should get a chance.

However they find out, there is a chance that they simply aren't interested in a close relationship. Not a rejection, so much as disinterest. So you should prepare yourself for that. It wouldn't be a reflection on you, simply how they feel. If they are interested in getting to know you, and you them, remember that your relationship with each of them will be different. You don't have any shared history, so you'll need to work hard to create a bond. One way might be to meet compare baby pics, or have a few simple get togethers.

  2. I would tell them. I know someone who didn't meet her brother till she was like 18 and he was well into his 20s. Now they are good friends.

  3. They probably won't reject you.

I'd go for it to try and meet them.
