  1. A linear transformer is also called a variable differential transformer.

    It usually has 3 toroidal coils, the primary one in the center, flanked by 2 secondary coils to its sides. A ferro-magnetic rod is going through all 3 coils.

    It is used to precisely measure movements or displacements (of whatever is attached to the rod) as the output voltage on the secondary coil changes with such movement.
