What is the longest continuous video on a Canon HG10?

I read the specs on the camera on the Canon website. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=ModelTechSpecsTabAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=15617#ModelTechSpecsAct

And it says that it can record 5-1/2 hours at the highest quality. I know that the battery will die before that but If I left it plugged in and hit record would it fill up the hard drive with one clip or several clips that each are 2Gb each or somehting like that?

I want to record an event at the finish line and have it go continous for hours. If it splits the video into seperate clips that is fine as long as it keeps recording and doesn't stop at the end some 2Gb or 4Gb clip limit.

I have the Canon HV20 so I am familiar with most of the camera just not the hard drive recording part.

thanks

  1. Twenty minutes per clip, but it is continuous. All hard drive camcorders do this. Just fix it in editing.

Be aware that the HV20 records using DV or HDV but the HV10 records using MPEG2 or AVCHD. The video quality of the HV20 will be better because it does not compress the captured video as much as the HV10. Not all video editors which claim AVHCD editing capabilities can edit AVCHD compressed video from all AVCHD camcorders.

If you get a high-capacity battery for the HV10 and keep the LCD panel closed (off), you may be able to get close to the recording time you need. Download the manual at canon.com. There is a table that has recording time estimates with a couple of different batteries
