  1. some arabian race in the desert

  2. It depends on what you define as a "race."

Endurance events, such as the Tevis Cup here in California, are ultra-long-distance events.  The Tevis Cup is 100 miles, and as some people have indicated, there are longer rides.  This website gives information about competitive endurance riding in America:  http://www.aerc.org/

This is a link to an article about the "Duel in the Desert" endurance event in Dubai:  http://www.saudiaramcoworld.com/issue/20...

That's one of the premier world-sanctioned endurance events.  The Maktoum family of Dubai, who are also major participants in Thoroughbred racing at the highest levels worldwide, are patrons of endurance competitions and are trying to promote international competitions.  (At one point there was a move afoot to try to get endurance competition sanctioned as an Olympic event, but that hasn't happened yet.)

Strictly speaking, endurance competitions aren't pure races, because the horses have to be vet-checked for condition and the horse that finishes first might not be declared winner if the vets rule that it fails the final vet check.  Also true:  most endurance riders covet the "best conditioned" award in an endurance competition almost more than finishing first in the competition.

With regards to Thoroughbred racing, the longest major flat races in the world are the "cup" races:  the Melbourne Cup, the Ascot Gold Cup, the Gold Cup at York, the Prix Du Cadran in France.  The Prix du Cadran, which is a Group I-level race, and the Gold Cup at York, are run at a distance of approximately 2-1/2 miles, and are the longest Group I or Grade 1 races that I know of.  The other "Cup" races are run at distances of 2 miles.

In terms of Classic, the British St. Leger and its French equivalent, the Prix Royal Oak, are run at distances of 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 miles.  These are Group I races.

Here in the US, the Jockey Club Gold Cup used to be run at the traditional "Cup" distance of 2 miles, but that was years ago.  Now the longest major stakes in the US is the San Juan Capistrano stakes at Santa Anita, which is run on the turf at a distance of 1-3/4 miles.  The Belmont stakes, at 1-1/2 miles, is the second-longest major stakes.

Steeplechase races are longer than flat races, and the major races in England are the Cheltenham Gold Cup, a race over hurdles run at a distance of 3 miles, 2-1/2 furlongs, and the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree, 4-1/2 miles.

I hope this answers your question.

  3. Horse marathon?

  4. 7832 meters.....that was in puerto rico.

  5. i believe that the camptown races are 5 miles long

  6. 9 million miles

  7. I think that The Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree is about 4 miles long over fences.

  8. It depends on the type of racing. http://www.horsetalk.co.nz/features/cj-2... shows a 400km Shahzada marathon that covers 80km per day and is the longest endurance ride in the world. Twice daily vet checks are given to all horses and in 2000 the winning horse completed it in 30 hours and 1 minute.
