  1. Officially seen on top gear and been down it myself

    the A15

which links the M180 and Lincoln.

  2. My local High St on a Saturday morning

You can drive for hours along there without ever seeing a bend

    all 300 yards of it.

  3. Probably one that follows the route of an old Roman road.

The longest I can think of is on the A68 in the borders.

It's straight, but definitely not level !

  4. I don't know but you can be sure there'd be a speed (revenue)camera somewhere along it.

  5. The longest motorway is the M6 from Leicester to Carlisle. There might be a few slight curves, but nowt much. Question is WHY?

  6. The roads have to curve. Even though a straight line is clearly the shortest route (at least over short-ish distances) between 2 points, long trunk roads and motorways have to pass dozens of towns, and a straight line to link them all is impossible. They also have to curve for other reasons, such as overcoming a natural obstacle or topographical feature.

Note I say the shortest route between 2 places is USUALLY a straight line. But look at the flight path of an aeroplane from say London to New York. The shortest route in this cave is a curve, rather than a straight line. This is because over vast distances the curvature of the earth comes into play. The earth is a sphere, and the shortest line between 2 points on the surface of a sphere is in fact a curve.

  8. M1? I think the M25 has bends but not too sure about the M1.

    A10?

  9. The most likely longest stretch of straight road in UK is one of our Roman Roads - many of which are hundreds of miles long in almost perfect straight lines.

1st choice of longest stretch of straight road in UK.

I think that is still the A1 [Roman Road], which runs from London to Edinburgh.

2nd choice of longest stretch of straight road in UK.

A section of the A15 provides the longest stretch of straight road in the UK. It runs North from Peterborough via Market Deeping, Bourne, Sleaford and Lincoln before disappearing at its junction with the M180 near Scawby. The road re-emerges ten miles east, and continues north past Barton-upon-Humber and over the Humber Bridge before terminating at Hessle near Kingston upon Hull.

Driving the Fosse Way [Roman Road] at night - pretty straight but not 100% - nice ride.
