  1. The Grand National.......Give beetlejuice his 10 points!!

  2. the grand national, 4.5 miles

  3. With regards to Thoroughbred racing, the longest major flat races in the world are the "cup" races: the Melbourne Cup, the Ascot Gold Cup, the Gold Cup at York, the Prix Du Cadran in France. The Prix du Cadran, which is a Group I-level race, and the Gold Cup at York, are run at a distance of approximately 2-1/2 miles, and are the longest Group I or Grade 1 races that I know of. The other "Cup" races are run at distances of 2 miles.

In terms of Classic, the British St. Leger and its French equivalent, the Prix Royal Oak, are run at distances of 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 miles. These are Group I races.

Here in the US, the Jockey Club Gold Cup used to be run at the traditional "Cup" distance of 2 miles, but that was years ago. Now the longest major stakes in the US is the San Juan Capistrano stakes at Santa Anita, which is run on the turf at a distance of 1-3/4 miles. The Belmont stakes, at 1-1/2 miles, is the second-longest major stakes.

Steeplechase races are longer than flat races, and the major races in England are the Cheltenham Gold Cup, a race over hurdles run at a distance of 3 miles, 2-1/2 furlongs, and the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree, 4-1/2 miles.

It's possible that there are longer races run under Jockey Club or National Hunt rules, but if there are, they aren't major stakes races.  They would be something like "overnight" races, under allowance conditions or claiming races.

FWIW, some years back Santa Anita carded a series of races run on the turf, all at distances of 1-1/4 miles or more, called the "Hillside Distance Series."  These races were run as starter allowance races (i.e., to be eligible a horse had to have started in a claiming race of a specific price or lower-- "open to three-year-olds and upwards that have started for a claiming price of $6250 or less since January 1st") and were very popular with the bettors.  I wish Santa Anita would do that again.

  4. I'd say the longest flat race is the Newmarket Town Plate.  It is held every year in Newmarket and is run over 3 miles and 6 furlongs.

I'd agree with the others that the grand National is the furthest NH race at 4 miles and 4 furlongs.

A mile and a half is still considered to be the optimum distance for a thoroughbred - which is why the Derby is held over this distance.  I, along with others, believe that there is too much emphasis on speed these days and that people need to be encouraged to breed middle-distance horses.

  5. university boat race?

  6. I stand corrected. A mile and a half is the longest race for Thoroughbreds run in the US on a dirt track. The longest race for Thoroughbreds in the US is the San Juan Capistrano run on turf at a distance of 1 and 3/4 miles.

  7. Grand National

    Steeple chase...

  8. Gotta be the Grand National as someones mentioned ,it....Not sure how long that cross country race they have introduced at Cheltenham,or The Welsh National and theres one long jumps race at Newcastle...Id bet on it being Grand National..
