  1. The world record for the longest train was set in Australia in 2001.  Here are the facts:

    Length: 7.5 km (4.7 miles)

    Number of cars: 682

Locomotives: 8 (GE AC6000CW--6,000 horsepower each, for a total of 48,000 horsepower)

Total weight: almost 100,000 tonnes (110,000 tons)

Cargo weight: 82,262 tonnes (90,678 tons) of ore

The world record for the fastest convetional train was set earlier this year. It was a modified/prototype French TGV, and it reached 574.8 km/h.  It made approximately 25,000 horsepower.

  2. That keeps changing, especially in the experimental class of new passenger rail cars.

Regularly scheduled like the TGV I believe is a bit over 350 KMH now, but in 6 months someone will be faster.

Experimental trains have gone over 500 kmh and faster each month.

Longest freight train is going to be well over 3 miles.

Where I work we have what is euphemistically known as an "undulating serpentine grade" so we are restricted by grade and curvature and still our trains will be up to 8500'

    Flatland trains are almost unlimited.

Updated, YIKES!! I just read about one in Australia that was over 7 km long!! That's more than 4 miles.

I heard an old timer say once "the d**n thing was so long when I stopped for coal the caboose was still going 40 miles an hour!!

  3. The following claim was Published on Tuesday 3rd April 2007 10:55 GMT

The French today claimed the world's fastest "train on rails" title by accelerating a modified TGV to a white-knuckle 574.8km/h (356mph), the BBC reports. The high-speed dash was made at 1114 GMT (1314 local) on a section of track between Paris and Strasbourg.

The previous record of 515km/h (320mph) was set in 1990, although a Japanese Maglev managed to reach a cool 581km/h (361mph) back in 2003.

Also Shanghai's spanking-new Maglev (magnetic levitation) train is reputed to be the world's fastest. It travels at.up to 500 kph in test runs; a good 60 percent faster than the renowned Bullet Trains.

Wow, these guys can really fly. Hope that answers the speed part of your question. The following website may answer your longest question. It has a cool video too. http://fogonazos.blogspot.com/2007/01/lo...

  4. How bout this? I work for the Minnesota Northern RR and in October of '06, we were in the process of accepting storage cars from the BNSF. These were trailer and container flats. We coupled up several trains of these cars to shove down a no longer used branch line. Anyway, we shoved 5.8 miles of train 29 miles. Infact it's still there, just north of Ada, MN. BNSF hasn't asked for it back yet. A car waiting at a crossing would have had to wait 25 minutes for the train to pass.
