  1. It is the pilots letting out a sigh of relief that they successfully landed the aircraft, LOL!

Usually it is reverse thrust.  The air makes quite a noise when its direction is forcibly changed.

  2. the noise you hear is reverse thrust.  the noise comes from the pilots deploying the reverse thrusters.  this help the aircraft slow down. it assist the braking system. most aircraft with out a propeller have this system.  on most of the large  propeller aircraft have a system that reverses the propellers pitch to provide similar action as reverse thrust but it does not provide as much stopping power.  hope this helps.

  3. Reverse thrust is correct and planes with" jet engines" have that Whoosh, you're talkin about.

  4. Thrust reversers are mechanical parts that deflect the output of jet engines to the front ( it would be very difficult to actually change the rotational energy of the jet engine ). That's what makes the sound.

  5. Bobeus -

Not all jet engines have thrust reversers. Most commercial jets do, and I suspect that this is indeed what you heard. Also note that the bypass airflow does not need to be pushed forward to create reverse thrust. Most reversers work by simply pushing it out to the side, with perhaps a slight forward angle (and even this forward angle is unnecessary). This works perfectly well due to the conservation of momentum.

  6. Yes. The reverse thrusters. Usually only commercial jets and some turbo props.

  7. WHOOSH

  8. Yeah, it's reverse thrust. Not all planes have it (like the smallers props such as a Cessna, etc.); however, the larger planes such as commercial jets or C130s almost certainly have them.

The "whoosh" noise is when the air that is forced out of the back of the engine is directed outwards and to the front to assist the plane in slowing down; it is reduces the amount of wear on the wheels' brakes~

  9. They are reversing the thrusters to act as brakes.  The Jet engines propel the plane forward by thrust.  The pilot can reverse that thrust to help brake

Try this.  On a soft surface...stand on a wagon or skate board with both feet.  Take a baseball and throw it forward as hard as you can   what happens?  when you throw forward, the board goes backwards...Taaa Dum  that is thrust.  You have just learned about jet propulsion
