Part 1:

A small circular coil of 15 turns of wire lies in a uniform magnetic field of 0.3 T, so that the normal to the plane of the coil makes an angle of 90 degrees with the direction of B . The radius of the coil is 1 cm, and it carries a current of 2 A.

What is magnitude of the magnetic moment of the coil? Answer in units of A m2.

Part 2:

What is the magnitude of the torque exerted on the coil? Answer in units of N m.

  1. Part 1:

    µ = NIA = 15 turns x 2 A x (π x (0.01 m)²) = 9.42 x 10^-3 A·m²

    Part 2:

    τ = µ x B = (9.42 x 10^-3 A·m²) x 0.3 T = 2.83 x 10^-3 N·m
