While Washington DC has the Congress building, London has the Westminster palace, Berlin has the Reichstag, etc., etc., what's the actual building that houses the seat of government in Rome?

  1. Campidoglio (Comune), Quirinale (Presidente della Repubblica), Palazzo Montecitorio (Camera dei Deputati), Palazzo Madama (Senato), Palazzo Chigi (Governo), Palazzo Koch (Banca d'Italia).

  2. The Palazzo del Quirinale is the official resident of the president of Italy. While invested with some powers, the president in Italy is more of a ceremonial figurehead, while the prime minister (known in Italian as the "presidente del consiglio dei ministeri" or President of the Council of Ministers) is the head of parliament and holds real power.

Parliament is divided in two house: The Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. The building in which the Senate meets is known as Palazzo Madama and the Deputies meet in Montecitorio -- so there really is no one building which corresponds to the famous government buildings that you reference in your question.

Palazzo Chigi is the official meeting place of the Council of Ministers (similar to the U.S. president's cabinet) and also the residence of the Prime Minister.

  3. Quirinale
