  1. The energy absorbed in the tropic is in form of heat from the sun. When heated, the air is less dense and rises. That creates a low pressure belt around the equator. On the other hand, the poles that have very little heat from the sun cool down and the air is denser and sinks. That creates a zone of high pressure.

Because gas as fluids tend to come in equilibrium, air moves then on the surface from the poles toward the equator and above; from the equator toward the poles. That would be the distribution of the heat energy if it wasn't that ... the earth spins. Because of that, the air displacement to and from the poles has to be combined with the earth rotation. It is called the Coriolis effect after the Frenchman who discovered it.

Because of that, the air masses never get a chance to reach the poles as the are deviated by the said effect clockwise on the northern hemisphere and anti-clockwise on the southern.

It then creates a new zone of high pressure around the latitudes 30 and a zone of low pressure around the latitudes 60. Those latter are called frontal lows because they are born on the front between cold and dry polar air and moist and warmer temperate air masses.
