  1. The same as most other belief systems.  These tend to be taught and learned at a very early age (usually before the person has learned to read and write language).  An extremely strong foundation at this time is nearly impossible to change as the persons develops and begins formal education.

Thought patterns (often associated with emotional memories) repeated often enough become personal reality.  This requires a parent or teacher who has a strong belief and the opportunity and ability to repeat it.

Individuals who are not subjected to this process usually have a weak foundation in the belief system and their thought patterns are capable of changing after the introduction of logic to the mind.  This usually happens as language is developed beyond the rudimentary stage.

If their education allows for information contrary to the primary belief system to be taught, then the individual can (but does not necessarily have to) accept alternate concepts.  This is usually a logical process because it must be incorporated into a mind which already has a logical foundation.

Not to make generalizations, but Creationists tend to hold belief systems which were learn when very young.  People who believe in the "Big Bang" and evolution tend to have learned this well after they became school age.

On the topic of origins, there are really two different issues.  One is the origin of the Universe and another is the origin of Humanity.  These are not necessarily joined in an individual's belief system.  This is why it is possible to have people who believe that Divinity created the Universe, but Humanity evolved from lower life-forms.
